Financial Counseling - What Is It Worth To You

It almost seems like a step backwards. Why would we want to pay someone to learn how to keep our money, especially when what we want to do is not only find ways to keep it, but also learn how to increase it—to build wealth. But paying someone to learn how to do this just doesn't seem right.

The thing that bothers me is that there are so many out there offering financial counsel—not to increase their clients wealth, but to increase their own wealth at the expense of their client.

Don't get me wrong, good solid counsel is worth paying for. I just do not like when financial help is helping the one offering the help more than the one needing the help. In fact, helping someone implies that you have something they don't. It is to help them get to where you are, rather than placing them a step away from getting to where they need to be.

It's like what my wife and I have, at times, painfully learned. You don't always save money by buying cheap. And cheap counsel at an exorbitant price is even worse.

So what is good counsel worth to you? It depends on what your need is. If you are in debt so bad that it is hurting you, good counsel can provide some relief. But you need to be aware of those who are out there to take advantage of your disadvantaged position. If you don't look out, you could get stuck into one of those situations where it would be more costly than it is worth.

If you are in the spot where you need to know how to manage your money to increase your net worth, you certainly do not have the pressure. But you do need to be aware that there still are those out there who are trying to "sell you a bag of goods."

Therefore, the only way to know what it is worth to you is if you can get some kind of a guarantee or proof, verifying the value you will get in return for the price. And personally, I think the cost should be a good percentage lower.
