Debt Relief Scams - How to Recognize Them

To some, help in the area of debt relief is synonymous to a "scam." And both are serious issues. Needing debt relief is an unfortunate position to be in, but a necessity for some. Scams are also a reality, and an unfortunate one. But how do we tell whether or not a service or product is legitimate before we get scammed.

A helpful distinction to make, first, is the difference between debt relief and debt elimination. The basic need for debt relief is when someone has gotten themselves into a position that requires them to find relief from the financial pressure associated with too much debt. Debt elimination, on the other hand, is someone who simply wants to achieve a level of financial freedom by eliminating all debt without it necessarily being "too much" debt.

The reason this distinction needs to be made is because if someone is in the position of desperately needing relief from their condition, they are more susceptible to being scammed. In contrast, a person who wants to eliminate their debt has the luxury, or the peace of mind to research something before purchasing it.

But for both positions, I would highly recommend verifying the legitimacy of either a service or a product before they are purchased. And there are two fast and simple points to do this.

  1. Can the provider give you a money back guarantee? Keep in mind, even if they promise to give your money back if you are not satisfied, it does not guarantee that they will without a hassle. It doesn't mean it will either. This is why the second step is important.
  2. Is the company registered with the Better Business Bureau, and do they have any legitimate and unresolved complaints.
  3. If you can verify these two points, you should have nothing to worry about.
